A couple weekends ago, I spent some time at the Mitchell Park Domes doing some engagement photography for my first client since restarting my business here in the Madison area. I decided to spend a little time the week before with family scoping things out a little before the shoot. You can read about that visit my photography blog ShawnRundbladePhoto.com.
Built in the late 50’s into the 60’s with construction wrapping up in 1967, the Mitchell Domes are currently the only conoidal glass greenhouses in the world. While the domes themselves still stand, a few changes have been made over the years to the area around them like removing the sunken garden outside. There are three domes and an attached greenhouse annex. There are two permanent exhibit domes. One is the desert dome, and the other is the tropical. The third is the rotated five times per year. The recent trip was while it is showing the floral dome which celebrates spring and blooming flowers.

I recently purchase a used Nikon 105mm f2.8 Micro (Macro) lens. It’s one I’ve been wanting for a while, and I finally made the jump. So of course, I am currently obsessed with photographing flowers. It’s a fun lens to use, but still has it’s limitations.
The Mitchell Park Domes are worth a visit if you happen to be visiting Milwaukee and love plants. You need to allow yourself about an hour to explore, but I could spend several there. Admission is less than $10 per person. They are located just off I-94 and is family close to Miller Park (sorry…American Family Field… whatever) if you’re in town for a ballgame.
